CREATING A KNOCKOUT BOOK COVER

Updated: Aug 13, 2021

DEAD CODE – First Review

Dead Code is not your usual murder mystery. With its satisfying psychological and technological backdrops, (and) its portrait of PTSD recovery ... the story is multifaceted and complex. It lingers in the mind long after Trisha arrives at solutions that open doors to new problems and opportunities alike." "Glenda Carroll creates a powerful portrait of not just another murder mystery, but an investigator still recovering from the last one." D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

CREATING A KNOCKOUT BOOK COVER

With the recent release of the cover for Dead Code, the third mystery in the Trisha Carson series, I realized how lucky I’ve been to work with cover designers, Rich Burns and Karen Brigando. They created the original concept for the covers that reaches across all three books.

This cover idea wouldn’t have seen the light of day, if I had signed with a big-name publishing company. Publishers decide what the cover will be (usually based on the current fashion for book covers.) They can even alter the name of the book.

I thought about that as I was finishing Dead Code. I liked the cover concept of the series, and I didn’t want it to change. Luckily, I found the best of both worlds in Indies United Publishing House. This is a small publisher that lets me do as much or as little as I want when it comes to the publication of my book. My choice was to keep the designers I trusted.

If you look at books listed on Amazon, you won’t find a cover that is like the Trisha Carson series. This design is unique. Maybe ... because it features design elements that are important to me and the stories that I write. For example: water, lots of water, and swimmers.

Coming up with a cover for Dead Code was challenging. Although there are open water and pool scenes, most of the action takes place on land. The undercurrent for this mystery is cybercrime and hacking.

I remember having a discussi+on with Rich one morning before workout at the pool. A visual ran through my mind of code moving through the water. Of course, there were swimmers, too. That’s as far as I could see. The two designers took my idea and produced an astonishing cover that sets the right tone for my latest mystery.

Launch date for Dead Code is October 27, 2021.
